On October 20, 2020, Amii Fellow and Professor of Computing Science at the University of Alberta Randy Goebel gave an online presentation as part of the Applied AI Summit (AISUM). The summit, organized by news media organization NIKKEI, is the foremost AI summit in Japan, featuring four days of presentations and panels from speakers across the globe.
Randy’s presentation centers around three main themes:
AI research in Canada, including the Pan-Canadian AI Strategy and the major AI hubs
The shrinking gap between AI theory and application, and the risks associated with accelerating application
Initiatives in the gap between theory and application, including: autonomous driving and end-to-end deep learning, the trade offs to consider between intelligent autonomous agents and intelligent infrastructure, and the role and importance of explainable AI (XAI) systems
