We are excited to announce that Alona Fyshe (Amii Fellow, Canada CIFAR AI Chair and Assistant Professor at the University of Alberta) will be moderating a panel discussion of Canadian female tech leaders in the upcoming Women in AI (WAI) Global Summit.

WAI is a nonprofit do-tank working towards gender-inclusive AI that benefits global society. The WAI Global Summit, taking place online on September 8, 2020, features 50 keynotes, panels, and workshops covering topics in Health, FinTech, Ethics, Business, Education, Culture and more. By bringing together AI experts and enthusiasts from all over the world, the event aims to be a step forward in making AI diverse and inclusive for all.

Alona will be leading the Shaping AI for good: Canadian AI ecosystem session, which showcases Canada’s strong and diverse AI ecosystem with perspectives from entrepreneurship, ethical AI, finance and healthcare. Alona will speak to leaders in AI from across the country about how women shape AI for good, including:

  • Dr. Foteini Agrafioti, Chief Science Officer at RBC and Head of Borealis AI, a research institute dedicated to advancing ethical AI capabilities. Foteini is also an inventor and TED speaker and serves as Co-Chair of the Government of Canada’s Advisory Council on Artificial Intelligence.

  • Nicole Janssen, Co-Founder & Co-CEO of AltaML, a machine learning product company with a vision to accelerate human potential through the power of ML and the goal of impacting one billion decisions by 2030. Nicole is also Co-Founder of Janalta Interactive, an online media company.

  • Valentine Goddard, AI Ethics and Social Impact expert, lawyer and founder & executive director of AI Impact Alliance, an NGO that aims to facilitate ethical and responsible implementation of AI. Valerie is also an expert for the United Nations’ Transformative Impact of New Technologies’ Group.

  • Valerie Pisano, President and CEO of Mila. Beneficial development of AI is a fundamental component of Mila’s mission. Valerie was previously Chief Talent Officer at Cirque du Soleil and holds an M.A. in Economics from HEC Montreal.

With a large amount of collective experience and brilliance, this panel of individuals will display the excellence that Canada has to offer to an international audience. We are particularly proud to be representing Alberta with our good friends at AltaML.
