Frank is a distinguished expert in artificial intelligence, specializing in deep generative modeling, probabilistic programming, and reinforcement learning. An associate professor of computer science at the University of British Columbia (UBC), he also leads the Pacific Laboratory for Artificial Intelligence (PLAI), where his work advances Bayesian inference and the development of state-of-the-art probabilistic models. His research addresses real-world applications like autonomous driving, robotics, and general AI.
Frank’s academic journey includes faculty positions at Oxford and Columbia Universities and a Ph.D. from Brown University under renowned advisors. Beyond academia, he’s an accomplished entrepreneur, founding InvertedAI, a Vancouver-based startup innovating in autonomous vehicle simulation technology. Earlier, he successfully sold ToFish!, a content-based image retrieval company, to Time Warner. His efforts are celebrated with awards from organizations like Xerox, Google, and Amazon, along with patents and over 100 publications.
He currently lives in Vancouver with his partner Alice and his son Arlo.
