October 2022 News: TechAid is here

Hey there,

We’re just days out from TechAid – our version of a charity run in support of some great local causes. Rather than racking up kilometres, we’re excited to put our love of technology front and centre to raise funds for our charity partners: Boyle Street Community Services and the United Way Alberta Capital Region’s Period Promise initiative.

If you haven’t heard, TechAid is a series of events from October 20-22, 2022, including the Reverse Expo (in collaboration with the Department of Computing Science at the University of Alberta), TechTalks and the Student Developer Conference. Through these events, we’re working to raise $25,000 for our charity partners while also giving an opportunity for people to connect around their love of technology. We will also have donation stations on-site at TechAid events where attendees can donate menstrual products in order to help the United Way eliminate period poverty.

We’re thrilled at the support TechAid has received thus far! While in-person tickets are now sold out, we have virtual tickets still available for TechTalks on October 21, 2022. Meanwhile, until the end of October, we’re encouraging donations for our charity partners through our Canada Helps page.

You don’t need to attend TechAid in order to support these great causes!

Industry & Community Updates:

• It is time for Techaid with things kicking off Oct. 20! While tickets are sold out for Reverse Expo and TechTalks, you can still take part online. We look forward to seeing you there!
• We're excited to be a part of Edmonton Startup Week! This week, our own Trevor Lamson joins a panel on how local orgs have benefited from ML adoption. And be sure to join Amii's Startups team to learn what ML looks like in the wild.
• Instrumar helps synthetic fibre manufacturers reduce costs, customer claims and waste with real-time sensor data. Find out how they are making their system even more powerful with the help of Amii and machine learning. 

Research Updates:

• A better understanding of intelligence could lead to AI that learns tasks at a new-human level. Check out Rich Sutton's roadmap for how to get there and how the research being done in Alberta could be a key part of it.
• What is the future of computer vision and how will it affect our world? Amii ML Scientist Tina Behrouzi shares what most excited her at this year’s International Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition.
• Find out more about cutting-edge research with AI Seminars. Recently, Rishabh Agarwal presented his seminar, ”How to Avoid Fooling Ourselves in Deep RL research," while Ali Zamani discussed using AI conversational agents to help healthcare workers find mental health.

Training Updates:

• The ML Foundations 1 course is a great way to start your AI journey. Registration is now open for the Nov. 3 class.
• After that, ML Foundations 2 allows you to expand on that knowledge and learn more about technical concepts in AI and ML. Sign up for the next class before Nov. 10.

Oct. 12 - Nov. 2: AI Founders Master Class

This series was designed by researchers for researchers. Participants will learn the fundamentals of being a founder and what is required to build an AI startup. Each session will be live and include a substantial Q&A component with the keynote speaker such as Fei-Fei Li, Co-Director of Stanford’s Human-Centered AI Institute, Pieter Abbeel, Director of the Berkeley Robot Learning Lab and Co-Founder of Covariant, Richard Socher, Founder of You.com, Aidan Gomez of Cohere, and Raquel Urtasun Founder of Waabi.

Oct. 18: October AI Meetup

Learn about the latest tools and techniques in machine learning, and explore topics that researchers and industry professionals are thinking about or working on.
