EDMONTON, AB – The Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii) has announced plans for the inaugural AI Week presented by Amii. The event will run from May 24-27, 2022 in Edmonton with a mix of in-person, hybrid and digital-first offerings. With programming for all audiences, the event marks Amii’s 5th anniversary and the 20th anniversary of the founding of the Amii research centre at the University of Alberta. With events hosted at a variety of locations across Edmonton, AI Week presented by Amii will showcase our place as a leader in artificial intelligence. The multi-day event will also highlight the province’s long-standing history of excellence in AI, bringing together global experts in the field alongside some of the world’s most innovative and forward-thinking businesses.
The inaugural celebration will feature a variety of events and programming focused around AI and machine learning. Audiences of all ages will have an opportunity to connect with AI leaders in research and industry, explore the promise and possibilities of the technology and even immerse themselves in the science of AI and machine learning. With something for experts and beginners alike, events and activations include:

AI Week presented by Amii will take place from May 24 to 27, 2022 at a range of venues across Edmonton. This year will mark the inaugural year of what will become an annual celebration of Alberta’s AI community. Amii partners with pipikwan pêhtâkwan and its startup company wâsikan kisewâtisiwin, to harness AI in efforts to challenge misinformation about Indigenous People and include Indigenous People in the development of AI. The project is supported by the PrairiesCan commitment to accelerate AI adoption among SMEs in the Prairie region.

Amii Fellow and Canada CIFAR AI Chair Russ Greiner and University of Alberta researcher and collaborator David Wishart were awarded the Brockhouse Canada Prize for Interdisciplinary Research in Science and Engineering from the National Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).
