One of Canada’s three main institutes for artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, our world-renowned researchers drive fundamental and applied research at the University of Alberta (and other academic institutions), training some of the world’s top scientific talent. Our cross-functional teams work collaboratively with Alberta-based businesses and organizations to build AI capacity and translate scientific advancement into industry adoption and economic impact.
The Machine Learning Engineering Specialist (MLES) serves as a key member of the Industry Team and an active participant in Amii achieving its vision of making AI/ML key drivers for economic success for companies in Alberta.
The Machine Learning Engineering Specialist uses their applied industry experience in modeling, deployment and operationalization in production environments to direct the research and development efforts of Amii Industry Partners and Clients. They bridge the gap between business opportunities and applied ML methods to provide direction and oversight on technical projects. They advise clients along the entire machine learning journey from scoping to model deployment and productionization. This includes making informed decisions about what the data requirements are, what modelling techniques should be tested, what technical resources need to be onboarded when more background research is required, and how success will be evaluated.
In addition to providing guidance to industry partners, the MLES will support fundamental research through partnerships with Amii Fellows and their students, working with one of the best ML departments in the world.
The MLES empowers Amii clients with the knowledge and skills they need to advance on the AI Adoption Spectrum by applying their unique combination of ML modelling and deployment experience. They support Amii's internal teams as subject matter experts based on their MLOps experience.
The role focuses on achieving excellence in three main accountabilities:
