The AI Seminar is a weekly meeting at the University of Alberta where researchers interested in artificial intelligence (AI) can share their research. Presenters include both local speakers from the University of Alberta and visitors from other institutions. Topics can be related in any way to artificial intelligence, from foundational theoretical work to innovative applications of AI techniques to new fields and problems.
On February 11, 2022, Richard S. Sutton (Fellow, Canada CIFAR AI Chair & Chief Scientific Advisor at Amii; Distinguished Research Scientist at DeepMind; Professor of Computing Science at the University of Alberta) presented “The Increasing Role of Sensorimotor Experience in Artificial Intelligence” at the AI Seminar.
We receive information about the world through our sensors and influence the world through our effectors. This is explored in AI research as sensorimotor experience – the sensations and actions of an agent’s ordinary interaction with the world. In this talk, Sutton explores the benefits and architecture for an intelligent agent that is entirely grounded in experience.
