The AI Seminar is a weekly meeting at the University of Alberta where researchers interested in artificial intelligence (AI) can share their research. Presenters include both local speakers from the University of Alberta and visitors from other institutions. Topics can be related in any way to artificial intelligence, from foundational theoretical work to innovative applications of AI techniques to new fields and problems.
In May 2022, Eleni Stroulia, from the University of Alberta's AI4Society, presented "Exploring Challenges and Opportunities for AI Across Disciplines" at the AI Seminar.
Abstract: In December 2019, the UofA launched AI4Society as one of its five Signature Areas, conceived to take a holistic approach to the study of AI, including designing new data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence algorithms, and developing appropriate computational platforms to implement them in real-world use cases, with awareness of the ethical concerns around data collection, and accountable and fair analysis. Since then AI4Society has seeded a number of interdisciplinary collaborations in a number of areas, such as manufacturing and construction, health, energy and clean technologies, business and finance, and education. In this presentation, Stroulia talks about some of these initiatives and share some ways in which the community at large can be involved.
