AI Seminar Series 2021: Zaheen Farraz Ahmad - Marginal Utility for Planning in Continuous and Large Discrete Action Spaces

The AI Seminar is a weekly meeting at the University of Alberta where researchers interested in artificial intelligence (AI) can share their research. Presenters include both local speakers from the University of Alberta and visitors from other institutions. Topics can be related in any way to artificial intelligence, from foundational theoretical work to innovative applications of AI techniques to new fields and problems.

On April 9, Amii's Zaheen Farraz Ahmad, Ph.D. Candidate at the University of Alberta, presented “Marginal Utility for Planning in Continuous and Large Discrete Action Spaces”.

Generating good candidate actions is key to the success of sample-based planners -- a powerful family of algorithms for generating intelligent behaviour from a model of the environment. In this talk, Ahmad shows how we can explicitly learn a candidate action generator by optimizing a novel objective: marginal utility.
