AI Seminar Series 2021: Devika Subramanian

The AI Seminar is a weekly meeting at the University of Alberta where researchers interested in artificial intelligence (AI) can share their research. Presenters include both local speakers from the University of Alberta and visitors from other institutions. Topics can be related in any way to artificial intelligence, from foundational theoretical work to innovative applications of AI techniques to new fields and problems.

On June 25, Devika Subramanian, professor of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at Rice University since 1996, presented "Big data and Machine Learning: Challenges and Opportunities" at the AI Seminar.

Devika Subramanian’s recent projects are in the areas of:

  • medical decision making,
  • forecasting weather and disease,
  • analysis of social media data to understand public support for issues,
  • detecting and analyzing the influence of bots on social media, neuroscience of human learning, and
  • assessments of hurricane wind and rainfall flooding risks.

In this talk, she will present an overview of four of her projects, and will summarize key lessons learned from formulating and deploying machine learning solutions.
