AI Seminar Series 2021: Kiri L. Wagstaff, Autonomous Novelty-Based Exploration of Mars

The AI Seminar is a weekly meeting at the University of Alberta where researchers interested in artificial intelligence (AI) can share their research. Presenters include both local speakers from the University of Alberta and visitors from other institutions. Topics can be related in any way to artificial intelligence, from foundational theoretical work to innovative applications of AI techniques to new fields and problems.

On February 26, Dr. Kiri L. Wagstaff, Principal Researcher in machine learning at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Associate Research Professor at Oregon State University, presented “Autonomous Novelty-Based Exploration of Mars.”

In this talk, Dr. Wagstaff describes how Mars rovers can use novelty measures to help select observation targets with the goal of accelerating discovery, and the constraints imposed by operating 100 million miles from Earth with limited computational resources.
