AI in Health: Learning Health Systems Event Recap – Oct 21, 2020

On October 21, 2020, members of the AI and health communities came together for an exciting conversation on Learning Health Systems, systems in which “science, informatics, incentives, and culture are aligned for continuous improvement and innovation, with best practices seamlessly embedded in the delivery process and new knowledge captured as an integral by‐product of the delivery experience” (Institute of Medicine, 2015).

The event featured Tim Murphy (Vice President of Health at Alberta Innovates), moderating a panel discussion between:

• Lawrence Richer MD, MSc, FRCPC – Academic Lead (Precision Health Signature Initiative); Associate Dean, Clinical and Translational Research (Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta)
• Dr. Neesh Pannu – Scientific Director, Kidney Strategic Clinical Network (AHS) and Assistant Dean; Clinical Research Platforms (University of Alberta)
• Randy Goebel – Amii Fellow; Professor, Department of Computing Science; Associate VP Research & Innovation and Academic (University of Alberta)

Participants discussed the definition, layers and benefits of Learning Health Systems; precision health and medicine; how AHS’ Strategic Clinical Networks fit into the picture; and what an AI-enabled healthcare system could look like in Alberta.
