Title: Why do Machine Learning Projects Fail?
Abstract: Up to 85% of ML projects either fail to be deployed or do not live up their expected potential. In the critical infrastructure sector there are three key areas of expertise that are needed for success. The first area is the knowledge and expertise in machine learning tools and techniques. The other two, industrial domain knowledge and operational deployment expertise, are just as important in achieving operational success but are much less frequently considered. This presentation will discuss the impact of industrial domain knowledge and operational deployment expertise on ML projects using lessons learned from actual ongoing and completed projects.
Bio: Scott is alumni of the University of Alberta, Computer Science and has worked over 30 years at companies responsible for bringing disruptive technologies to market. These include being the first employee and Bioware where he lead the technology development for it's formative years and is currently the product owner of SentientQ, Willowglen System's next generation SCADA platform.
The University of Alberta Artificial Intelligence (AI) Seminar is a weekly meeting where researchers (including students, developers, and professors) interested in AI can share their current research. Presenters include local speakers from the University of Alberta and industry as well as other institutions. The seminars discuss a wide range of topics related in any way to Artificial Intelligence, from foundational theoretical work to innovative applications of AI techniques to new fields and problems of interest.
