Yutaka Yasui’s research focuses on developing and applying biostatistical and epidemiological methods at the intersection of biology, public health and clinical sciences.
Yutaka Yasui’s research focuses on developing and applying biostatistical and epidemiological methods at the intersection of biology, public health and clinical sciences. He works to address quantitative scientific questions through developing and applying innovative study designs and analytic methods. Over the past 20 years, he has been focused on analytic strategies of high-dimensional biological data in large-scale clinical/epidemiologic studies such as machine learning for multiple-variant epistasis in genetics, gene-set/pathway analyses in transcriptomics, and mass-spectrometry-based cancer biomarker discovery in proteomics. His work in pediatric oncology focuses primarily on long-term survivorship of childhood cancers to better predict and manage the effects of childhood cancer treatment. Yutaka was also part of a team of researchers who developed Auto-MODS, a novel tool for tuberculosis diagnosis that can be used in resource-limited settings – work which achieved a Thailand National Innovation Award in 2013.
Yutaka is a Fellow at Amii, a Professor in the School of Public Health at the University of Alberta, and a Member of the Epidemiology & Cancer Control group at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN. He has been the academic supervisor of more than 40 Master’s, Doctoral and Postdoctoral researchers and has been involved in more than 70 peer-review-funded research projects as principal investigator or co-investigator. Yutaka has co-authored more than over 400 peer-review publications, with a total of 42,000+ citations and an h-index of 105, including those in the Journal of the American Medical Association, the Journal of the American Statistical Association, and Biometrics. Previously, Yutaka held a Canada Research Chair in Biostatistics and Epidemiological Methods, and he has received a number of teaching and research awards.
